Palo Alto Mini Marathon

ML2014STANFORD UNIVERSITY - April 15, 2016 - As you can see from the cover photo, I was doing my best to hold my own in the Palo Alto Mini Marathon. Nobody asked to see my ID, of which I was flattered, as I did my best to keep up with these mini foot racers. In hindsight, I would have put in more effort in my preparation for the event, but the entire trip was kind of a surprise. My grandkids, Rolf, Poppy, and Tommy kind of wrangled me into the event and they got the organizers to overlook my taller more seasoned stature. The race was run around the central quad of the Stanford married student housing. Racers came from all over the world, or at least their parents did as they were accepted into the university. Most of the runners failed to pace themselves and they took off like jack-rabbits. I went slower and steadier, having previously read the story of the tortoise and the hare. But what that story failed to worn me about was the fact that all of these youthful hares never realized they were supposed to get tired. Lap after lap I found them getting ahead further and further as they just continued to run fast throughout race and on to the finish line.

DLBF - Yes, I earned the "Dead Last But Finished" award. Those that finished ahead of me were also rife with giggles as they knew I was no real competition. Finishing last was a privilege, as the hugs I received after collapsing on the ground made the sacrifice all worth while.

So the next time you hear somebody bragging about running the Squaw Peak 50, the St. George Marathon, or the Ragnar, let them know that you have a close friend who has run the 2016 Palo Alto Mini Marathon, where everybody was a winner.
