"COACH, YOU ARE EJECTED!"

"COACH, YOU ARE EJECTED!"
JULY 18, 2017 - ADVENTURES IN UMPIRING - In the past few years I have worked hard to improve my sports officiating skills. This brings with it lots of adventures, the latest of which took place here in Orem at the PONY Baseball State Championship Tournament. I was fortunate to be assigned to work games with my son Adam... Enjoy the read! "Your partner has blown four calls" the assistant coach stated directly. With a 2 second pause I looked him in the eye and said calmly, "Coach, you are ejected." He looked at me stunned. My partner, Adam, looked onward in total awe and almost disbelief as he had never seen me throw anybody out of a game before. Anybody who knows me very well knows that I go out of my way to avoid sending anybody out of the...

Weird Roof Snow Melt = Poor Insulation???

Weird Roof Snow Melt = Poor Insulation???
HOMEOWNER'S GUIDE TO SELF-DIAGNOSE INSULATION WOES It is bitter cold here in Northern Utah and this 2015-16 snow season is much greater than recent years. The snow, combined with the below freezing temperatures makes it rather easy to tell which homes have good insulation and which homes are severely lacking. This blog entry will give homeowners a way to self-diagnose attic insulation issues. NOTE: If you live in snow country, then you will love the following information. However, if you are my warm weather friends catching waves in 60 degree weather in Southern California, then you will find it amusing at best. WHAT DOES ATTIC INSULATION DO? Attic insulation is designed to help keep the temperature inside the home constant. We spend lots ...

Smokey and the Bandit Revisited - Fast-N-Loud

Smokey and the Bandit Revisited - Fast-N-Loud
While finishing off inspection reports this morning I was completely distracted watching the Discovery Channel's Fast-N-Loud two part episodes featuring a "Smokey and the Bandit" build. Search your DVR and find the episodes and enjoy the memories. I posted on their FB page... "I just watched the Smokey and the Bandit episodes and was thoroughly entertained... If there were a remake with all of these same characters on the big screen I would be the first to slap down the cash for the recliner seating and the extra large buttered popcorn to see it... Way-To-Go- Guys!!!" FLASHBACKS - In 1977 I found myself in Campbell, Missouri (population 1,600) spending my summer while on school break from Southern California. My older sister Susie lived in ...

The Silver Beaver Escapes - Humbling Experience

The Silver Beaver Escapes - Humbling Experience
It was a great experience walking into the historic Alpine Tabernacle in American Fork, Utah yesterday afternoon and see about two thousand people there to commemorate 92 recipients of the 2015 Silver Beaver Award. The event was hosted by the Utah National Parks Council of the Boy Scouts of America. The UNPC is the largest of the 273 councils in the BSA and therefore they award the most Silver Beaver awards annually and put on one of the largest reception events. Looking down the list of recipients I was humbled as I knew a great deal of them and had worked with many of them in teaching, training, and other outdoor events in the past 29 years of my Scouting service. The 60 page booklet issued to all attendees was impressive. I was sitting t...

Born To Run Turns 40

Born To Run Turns 40
I was driving along the interstate near Salt Lake City yesterday and the DJ mentioned that it is the 40 year anniversary of Bruce Sprinsteen's "Born to Run". That's just plain crazy!I put that song on and I am immediately transported back and I am a younger man singing right along with each line. I know it has been a long time, but 40 years... Incredible! And if you are like me, then you sing along with Bruce as well. What are some of those lyrics anyway?... Here they are. I challenge you to read them beginning to end and not be singing the song in your head as you read... BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN - Born To Run Lyrics In the day we sweat it out in the streetsof a runaway American dreamAt night we ride through mansions of gloryin suicide machinesSp...

TAKE A LEAP - True Confessions - Sports Officiating

TAKE A LEAP - True Confessions - Sports Officiating
MICHAEL'S MOTIVATIONAL MEMORIES ARCHIVE GO FOR IT!  April 6, 2015 - The first quarter of 2015 is over and it is time for me to share one of my big goals for 2015. For years I have officiated different sports on the amateur level while devoting most of my free time to coaching my kids and enjoying their sports and arts activities. Now that our youngest child Aaron is a junior in high school, there was little opportunity to coach, so I shifted my focus to serious officiating. For the past 6 years I have been umpiring baseball on the youth level and was getting very proficient at it as the rule books became part of my soul and instinctual instead of forced. For decades I have officiated LDS church basketball on the local and regional ...

Rachel & Aaron - Any Dream Will Do

Rachel & Aaron - Any Dream Will Do
Opening night of "Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" was a huge success. As a proud father I was amazed at the soothing voice of my son Aaron.  Paired up with Rachel Peterson as the narrator and these two hit a grand slam over the fence home run. The show runs through Tuesday night at Orem High School in the big auditorium with a 6PM start. Would you like a sneak peak at the show?... I thought you would. Michael Leavitt - Orem, Utah

Go For It - Drop The Ledge!!!

Go For It - Drop The Ledge!!!
MICHAEL'S MOTIVATIONAL MEMORIES ARCHIVE YOU CAN DO IT! -February 16, 2015 - Happy President's Day - Even if it seems insurmountable, you too can drop the ledge!!! If this photo doesn't get your heartbeat racing, then you have never fastened skis to the bottoms of your feet. There is something exhilarating as you anticipate the next turning motion on a steep slope. Over-thinking brings disaster. At this point you are fully committed and you have to let your training and natural instincts take over and as you cross the line gravity takes over and there is no turning back.... This is also the point where you might hear loud shrills of enthusiasm.... So don't be scared, take the drop!!! You Can Do It... But Only If You Try!!! Michael Lea...

Confetti Eggs - Who remembers playing with these?

Confetti Eggs - Who remembers playing with these?
Nothing good can come from confetti eggs except a whole lot of fun. These must be a Latino creation that goes hand in hand with Pinatas, because they both typically require a party and the desire to be having a great time. Oh yeah, and cannot be at all worried about whether or not the fun creates a big mess. To make confetti eggs, carefully break open real eggs and drain off the white and the yolk and then wash them clean.  You can then dye them like Easter eggs or just keep them white or brown. Once dry, fill with confetti and then glue a small piece of tissue paper over the drain/fill hole.  Once the egg shells are dry, then you have confetti egg bombs that can be used multiple ways... The most popular use is to bust them over ...

Go For It! Michael's Motivational Moments

Go For It! Michael's Motivational Moments
MICHAEL'S MOTIVATIONAL MEMORIES ARCHIVE GO FOR IT! - Pictures can evoke immediate moods, feelings, and also inspire us to action. This photo of the little boy on the skateboard immediately does it for me. As we look for the huge ball to drop in Times Square on New Year's Eve, we are faced with the dilemma of what changes should be made in our lives to make the new year even better than the one that just passed. I encourage us all to be very proactive and set a clear course for success in 2015. But how can we do this? It's simple; here are the recommended steps. DISCUSS - Set aside some private time where you can talk with that good looking reflection in the bathroom mirror. Then get together with your significant other so that you can kic...

EXCITED! - Dollar Shave Club Christmas Present

EXCITED! - Dollar Shave Club Christmas Present
To say I am excited is a bit of an understatement. My son Adam gave me a gift certificate to join the Dollar Shave Club* for Christmas and I immediately cashed it in online. It is December 27th and my first monthly package arrived in our mailbox earlier today. This wouldn't have been a big deal 10 years ago, but long about age 43 I actually started to get whiskers. before then, i went through the motions, but if I went for a couple of days without shaving the only one who noticed was my lovely wife Shelly. But now, things are much different. What is the Dollar Shave Club? The Dollar Shave Club is an online service that forgoes the store shelves and sets people up on either the $2, $6, or $9 per month package.  This means that every mo...

Grilled Marshmallows??? Grandkid Eating Solutions & Delicious Memories

Grilled Marshmallows??? Grandkid Eating Solutions & Delicious Memories
GRILLED MARSHMALLOWS - 11/22/2014 - Are you the last Grandpa out there to learn that you can grill marshmallows on an electric griddle? The young ones love it, and you don't end up smelling like a campfire when you are done. All-in-all grilled marshmallows are a win-win solution that I encourage you to try out with your young kids, and grandkids. HOW DID IT HAPPEN? Shelly and I had the great opportunity to have our 3 grandchildren spend the night last night while their parents were off doing parent stuff. So after an evening of pizza, playing games, Bubble Guppies, and artwork with Auntie Haily, they finally all shut their eyes and slept solidly through the night. As they awoke this morning, the pressure upon Grandpa (me) was on as I co...

KNICKERBOCKER 1974 - NOW ONLINE

KNICKERBOCKER 1974 - NOW ONLINE
KNICKERBOCKER 1974 - At the request of several members of the Washington Irving Junior High alumni Facebook group, I put the scanning on project of the 1974 Knickerbocker on the front burner and I made it a priority to complete. It has been yet another labor of love scanning the 1974 Washington Irving Knickerbocker yearbook and then formatting it for easy viewing on the internet. I have two versions available and both require registering for my website to access. This is easy to do and helps control and monitor who is viewing the content. STANDARD VERSION - I took the time to create a version that is free from all added autographs and best wishes. This version is available to all Irving alumni. MICHAEL'S EDITION - I also uploaded a very ...

Cookies - Do A Good Turn Daily!

Cookies - Do A Good Turn Daily!
Originally shared on www.UtahScouting.com I walked in the door from a long night of umpiring girl's tournament softball when my son Aaron said, "Hey Dad, you have every man's vision of loveliness sitting on your desk.""What are you talking about?" I responded, and with that Aaron bounded down the stairs to come back with a plate of cookies wrapped in cellophane and a note written on lined school paper. I was flushed with feelings of love and appreciation as I handed the note to Aaron and asked him to read it to me... Kade - Bacon Boys' Patrol LeaderWow! Such an act of kindness from an 11 year-old young man. The Boy Scouts of America have a tried and true slogan, "Do a good turn daily!" Young men learn and repeat this slogan in thei...

BYU Cross Country Race - #ohscc

BYU Cross Country Race - #ohscc
This morning was the second time I have attended the huge Brigham Young University cross country race.  This event features both college and high school races and there are over a thousand runners. Our son Aaron ran for the Orem High School Varsity team and he came in fourth from his school. As a junior he has shown incredible improvement from the same time last year and he really loves to run.  The following 98 photos feature all of the Orem runner except the Fresh/Soph boys because I arrived just as they finished... Sorry! Click on any of the photos and open up the larger view... Enjoy!

Social Networking - The Business Perspective

Social Networking - The Business Perspective
I took the time to format some electrical bonding information here on my blogging website and then I invited some fellow inspectors to visit the page and click the “Thumbs Up” like button at the bottom and share it on their social networks if they did indeed found the information beneficial. I received back the following response... Michael, Don't get your feelings hurt if some of us don't want to spend every waking moment on the Social network sites. Everyone has their own idea about how to handle these things, and there are other resources' out there - NAME REMOVED FOR PRIVACY I then took the time to write my thoughts. At first I had to deal with what could have been veiled sentiments by the home inspector, but then I took the time to ...

Circuit Analyzers - Which Should I Buy?

Circuit Analyzers - Which Should I Buy?
Testing electrical outlets is very important. The selection of testing tools is vital to making accurate assessments. Knowing what your testing device is telling you is also critical as you convey your findings to your clients. So what tester should you use. What if somebody was purchasing a tester for you, which one would you choose? Longtime inspector from Hawaii, Michael Stewart asked: Aloha all,  Are there any opinions out there on which circuit analyzer performs best in our line of work, the Ideal Suretest or the Amprobe INSP-3?Online reviews seem to favor the Amprobe but I seem to recall the Suretest as being the one to have from some you out there. My bride is purchasing the one I want as a late Christmas gift and I sure want t...
