Adam & I Get To Sing At The LDS Conference - Watch Us Saturday Night!
This Saturday night my son Adam and I have been invited to be part of a 364 men's choir for the Priesthood Session of the Semi-Annual General Conference for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. This is a huge once in a lifetime opportunity and I would love it if all of my family and friends tuned in online around the world and looked for us during the choir numbers.
MORMON TABERNACLE CHOIR - Most of you are familiar with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, right? Well they are the featured choir for most of the other sessions of the 6 session conference held twice a year at the Salt Lake City, Utah LDS Conference Center. A bit of trivia... The Conference Center features a pipe organ with 7,667 pipes. I am looking forward to feeling its power blast us as we stand in the choir seating to sing our numbers.
The Saturday night Priesthood Session of the conference is geared for the men and boys ages 12 years and older. I received the invitation to participate in the Father and Son choir along with my 17 year old son Aaron. Unfortunately/Fortunately, Aaron will be participating in the Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City, Utah Saturday, so the invite was changed to include the beautiful voice of my oldest son Adam who is now attending Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
REHEARSALS - Adam and I have been going to weekly rehearsals since August and we get the chance to sing four numbers in the 2 hour session of conference. I have been totally wowed by the power of the voices during the rehearsals and I am getting very excited for the performance this coming Saturday night.
In the Doctrine & Covenants section 5 verse 12 it states, "For my soul delighteth in the song of the heart; yea, the song of the righteous is a prayer unto me, and it shall be answered with a blessing upon their heads." I look forward to singing valiantly the songs from my heart and sharing the joy and blessings these songs have brought into my life with others. My favorite number is "Jesus, the Very Thouth of Thee" because the words touch my soul. There have been so many times in my life where I have looked heavenward, almost to the point of giving up, and I have been filled with His goodness and I have received the strength to carry onward. I know that His love for me is real and that he has an equal love for each one of us.
ITINERARY - Come See The Dress Rehearsal - The itinerary for the week includes a dress rehearsal in the 21,000 seat LDS Conference Center tomorrow night. This building is huge and features the incredible pipe organ. Friends and family are invited to attend tomorrow night and must arrive at the Conference Center by 6:30 PM and be ready for a 7PM start. They have told us to plan on 2 hours where most of the attention will be given to logistics and sound. I can only hope that they decide to keep my 5'10" son Adam next to me at 6'6". From there we will next arrive Saturday afternoon at 2:30 PM to be ready for the 6 PM (MST) start of the Priesthood session.
The music is so very beautiful, and I don't think it is a spoiler to share the numbers we are going to sing here. They are:
- 1) Let Zion In Her Beauty Rise
- 2) We'll Bring The World His Truth
- 3) Jesus, The Very Thought Of Thee
- 4)Lord, I Would Follow Thee
FEELING A BIT INADEQUATE - I believe that I am the most inadequate voice in this choir. I am working hard and I have every confidence that the Lord's holy angels are going to lift me up and help me become equal to the task. I am constantly awestruck at the talented voices that surround me each week during the practices and all I can give is my very best. The scriptures promise us that if we humble ourselves before Him, that the Lord will make weak things strong. I am preparing to give this my very best and am counting on that promise because my voice is a moderately weak talent that I need the Lord's help making strong.
ADAM'S TALENTED VOICE - My son Adam has an incredible voice. He normally sings tenor, but he has come down to the baritone with me so that I will have his voice to follow. He came from heaven to our family with an incredible voice. He has then invested thousands of hours strengthening his gift and loves to share his talent with others. I have been blessed with his ability to help infuse me with the confidence I am needing to make it through this broadcast. As a side note, all four of our kids have incredible singing voices. Shelly and I just watch them in awe as we wonder which one of us can take the least bit of credit for their talents... Since it obviously skipped Shelly and I's generation, this is further proof that we have a loving Heavenly Father who has entrusted to us four wonderful kids blessed with their own unique talents.
ALL INVITED TO WATCH - The LDS Conference is broadcast live on the internet and all people, both male and female are invited to watch. The conference includes music and inspiration talks that have been prepared by the General Authorities of the LDS Church. I have watched nearly every conference for over the last 3 decades and I am always inspired. There have been a few that I have been lucky enough to attend in person, and those have also been very memorable.
