I walked in the door from a long night of umpiring girl's tournament softball when my son Aaron said, "Hey Dad, you have every man's vision of loveliness sitting on your desk.""What are you talking about?" I responded, and with that Aaron bounded down the stairs to come back with a plate of cookies wrapped in cellophane and a note written on lined school paper.

I was flushed with feelings of love and appreciation as I handed the note to Aaron and asked him to read it to me...

Young men learn and repeat this slogan in their weekly meetings, but when they first hear it they wonder and often ask aloud, "Hey Brother Leavitt, what is a good turn?"

Good Turn - noun

1. a helpful and friendly act; good deed; favour - Collins English Dictionary - Complete & Unabridged 2012 Digital Edition

This all derives from the word "Turn" which has several great meanings, that all start to broaden our understanding...

5. to change the position of, by or as if by rotating; move into a different position
6.to change or alter the course of; divert; deflect
7. to change the focus or tendency of

So what effect did Kade's "Good Turn" have upon me when I finally came home to be the recipient? Well he softened my heart. He also changed my course of direction and filled my heart with thoughts of what a great young man he is, as well as what great young men all of our 11-year-old Scouts are in their daily lives. He made me stop and realize that the efforts of Brother Kevin Mellander, Brother Rob Cornwall, and myself are really having a positive influence in the lives of these young men. He allowed me to stop for a few minutes and bask in the glory of feeling appreciated. Talk about a huge emotional payoff! And here I sit at my computer at 5:45 the next morning still feeling great thoughts as a result of his good turn and wondering how I can return the favor to others in my life throughout the rest of today and the tomorrows. And all of this from a plate of cookies and a hand written note... Isn't life wonderful?

Make it a great day!!!
