A favorite TV show of mine is Penn & Teller's Fool Us, and I absolutely love magic tricks. I was set and ready to rule on this pitch when nothing came towards me at home plate. Where did it go? What happened? Why did the pitcher not deliver the pitch? What in the world happened?
BLOWN MECHANICS - Yes, you can fault me all day long for not immediately coming up strong with my left arm out and a loud "Illegal Pitch" vocal call. Yep, I totally blew that and I immediately went into the awe and wonder mode of, "What in the world is going on?"
WHAT TO DO? - I came up out of my stance sure that something must have happened to prevent the pitcher from delivering the pitch. I seem to always want to go into mercy mode and try to come up with anything that I can blame, so as not to penalize the pitcher. In this case, it was just a messed up delivery on her part and she opted to not throw an extremely wild pitch and advance the runner. Alrighty then, we have an illegal pitch.
RULING - An illegal pitch was ruled and since the count was 3 balls and 1 strike prior to the pitch, we add a ball to the count and the batter was awarded first base for ball 4.
WHAT TO DO NEXT TIME - This happens once every 30-50 games (or more) and I know of no way I can keep my game face and not go into my love of magic mode. Most of you are better than I and would never be as delayed as I seem to be at these magical moments. I vow to work on immediately coming up with the strong illegal pitch mechanic and lessen my use of the "Total Amazement" mechanic.
WHAT TYPES OF PLAYS PUT YOU IN "TOTAL AMAZEMENT" MODE?
Make it a great game! Michael Leavitt - Orem, Utah
