Over 24 Injured in Miami Heat Deck Collapse
It is always sad to report another deck failure that causes injury. Last night’s warm Southern Florida weather brought a huge crowd to the Shucker’s Bar in Miami, Florida to watch their home town Miami Heat baseketball team play the San Antonia Spurs in the fourth game of the NBA Finals. Just before halftime, as the Heat were on a run, the deck over the bay gave way in the middle, folded in a V, and the inebriated patrons went into the drink. 15 had to be transported to local hospitals and many more were treated on the scene. This collapse was complicated by the need to rescue the fallen victims from water and the fact that nobody knew exactly how many people they were searching for. This is far different than a backyard party where you know you had 18 guest before the collapse, since this was an open bar party atmosphere and there could have been 50 or a 150. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to conclude that the cause of the failure was overloading and over movement in the excitement of the pivotal game, but there has been no formal reports as to the cause of the failure.
